chapter 1 :시작

의성에 머무르게 된 계기와 어떤 일을

하고 계신가요?

저는 원래 대구에서 나고 자랐고, 부모님도 대구 분이라 의성엔 연고가 하나도 없었어요. 그때 대구에서 하던 일이 사람들과의 관계도 잘 안 맞고 마음이 힘들어서, 다 내려놓고 귀농만 하자는 생각으로 어머니와 함께 땅을 보러 다녔습니다.

대구 근교를 다 돌아다니다가 부동산 소개로 지금 이 땅을 보게 됐는데, 마음에 들어서 구매하면서 귀농을 하게 됐어요. 올해로 딱 10년째, 2016년에 들어왔습니다. 지금은 사과 과수원을 운영하면서, 직접 기른 사과로 술을 빚는 양조장도 함께 하고 있어요.

I was born and raised in Daegu, and so were my parents, so I had no ties to Uiseong at all. Back then, things weren't going well in Daegu — the work, the relationships — so I decided to let it all go and simply return to farming. My mother and I looked at land together, starting near Seongju and working our way through the Daegu area, until a real estate agent showed us this place. I liked it right away, bought the land, and that's how I became a farmer. It's been exactly ten years now — I moved here in 2016. Today I run an apple orchard and, alongside it, a small brewery where I make wine from the apples I grow myself.

의성에서 어떤 일을 하고 계신가요?

과수원이 일의 한 60% 정도를 차지해요. 그런데 겨울엔 한가해서 취미로 한식·일식 요리사 자격증도 따고 가죽공예도 하다가, 요리를 하면서 자연스럽게 술을 배우게 됐습니다. 2017년 농민사관학교에서 처음 술 빚는 법을 배운 뒤로 계속 담가왔고, 4년 전에 정식으로 양조장을 시작했어요. 처음엔 실패도 많이 하고 버린 술도 많았지만, 지금은 안정적으로 맛을 낼 수 있게 됐습니다. 제가 직접 기른 사과와 의성에서 나는 재료로만 만든 사과술과 딸기주를 판매하고 있고, 복숭아술과 막걸리도 곧 선보일 예정이에요. 대표 품종은 시나노골드와 부사입니다.

The orchard takes up about 60% of my time. But winters are quieter, so I picked up hobbies — I earned Korean and Japanese cooking certifications and tried my hand at leathercraft. Cooking naturally led me to brewing, which I first learned at the Farmers' Academy in 2017 and kept practicing on the side. Four years ago I turned it into a proper brewery. There were plenty of failed batches I had to throw out early on, but I can make a consistent, good product now. Right now I sell apple wine and strawberry wine made only with apples I grow myself and ingredients from Uiseong, with peach wine and makgeolli on the way. My signature apple varieties are Shinano Gold and Fuji.

chapter 2 :삶과 일

의성에서의 삶은 어떤가요?

처음엔 정말 아무것도 안 하고 농사만 지었어요. 그런데 팔아야 하니까, 집에만 있어서는 안 되겠더라고요. 그래서 동네 활동을 시작했습니다. 주민자치회나 자율방범대 같은 활동을 하면서 사람들을 알게 됐고, 자연스럽게 판로도 넓어졌어요. 또 우연히 시작한 가죽공예 취미로 회원이 2만 명쯤 되는 온라인 커뮤니티에 들어가게 됐는데, 사과를 판매해도 되냐고 물어봤더니 흔쾌히 허락해주셔서 공동구매 형태로 판매를 시작했죠. 그렇게 4~5년째 꾸준히 팔다 보니 이제는 사람들이 먼저 연락을 줄 정도가 됐어요. 양은 많지 않아서 택배로 한 번에 300~400개 정도 나가면 거의 다 소진됩니다.

At first, I did nothing but farm. But I realized I couldn't just stay home — I had to sell what I grew. So I started getting involved in the village: the residents' council, the volunteer safety patrol. Through those activities I got to know people, and naturally my sales network grew too. Then, almost by accident, a leathercraft hobby led me into an online community of about 20,000 members. I asked the community's admin if I could sell apples there, and they said yes — so I started selling through a kind of group-buy. I've been doing that steadily for four or five years now, to the point where people reach out to me first asking when the apples will be ready. The quantities are small, though — once I ship out 300 to 400 boxes, they're pretty much gone.

chapter 3 : 꿈과 미래

의성에서 어떤 꿈을 꾸고 계신가요?

올해 딸기주가 처음 나왔고, 곧 복숭아술과 막걸리도 나올 예정이에요. 제가 직접 농사짓는 건 사과지만, 청년농업인 활동을 하면서 알게 된 친구들, 그리고 다른 청년 농부들이 키운 딸기나 복숭아 같은 재료들도 함께 활용해서 같이 성장하고 싶습니다. 제 물건이 팔리면서 자연스럽게 의성의 다른 특산물들도 함께 알려질 수 있으면 좋겠고요. 또 지금 밭 뒤편에 비워둔 공간이 있는데, 여유가 되면 그곳에 양조장과 체험 공간을 함께 짓고 싶어요. 시음 체험이나 막걸리 만들기 체험 같은 것도 할 수 있게요. 최근엔 마을 학교에서 아이들을 대상으로 브런치 체험 수업도 진행했는데 반응이 정말 좋았습니다. 앞으로 사과를 활용한 요리나 제철 재료 클래스도 꾸준히 열어보고 싶어요.

This year, strawberry wine came out for the first time, and peach wine and makgeolli will follow soon. I only grow apples myself, but through activities with other young farmers, I've made friends who grow strawberries and peaches, and I'd like to use their harvests too so we can grow together. As my products sell, I hope it naturally helps introduce Uiseong's other local specialties as well. There's also an empty plot behind my orchard I've deliberately left unplanted — I'd eventually like to build a brewery and an experience space there, so visitors could try tastings or even make their own makgeolli. Recently I gave a brunch workshop for kids at the village school, and they loved it. Going forward, I'd like to keep offering cooking classes using apples and seasonal ingredients.

의성에 살면서 외지인에게 추천해주고 싶은 곳이 있나요?

지인이 의성에 놀러 온다고 하면 저는 꼭 빙계계곡 야영장에 카라반을 예약해요. 거긴 물놀이도 할 수 있고 아이들 뛰어놀 공간도 있고 도시의 답답함이 없어 캠핑의 느낌을 느끼면서 텐트같은 장비는 필요없어서요!

Whenever a friend comes to visit Uiseong, I always book a caravan at the Bingye Valley campsite. You can play in the water there, and there's plenty of space for kids to run around. It doesn't feel like the city's cramped, stuffy vibe, so you get the full feeling of camping — without even needing gear like a tent.
